The Leftwich House is a cool old building in Greenville, Ohio. It was built way back in 1875. This house has a special mix of two building styles: Italianate and Stick-Eastlake.
It's built with a strong wooden frame on a stone base. The Leftwich House is one of the best examples of Stick-Eastlake style homes in the Greenville area. People say its porch is "outstanding"!
About the Leftwich House
The Leftwich House is a private home, meaning a family lives there. It's not a museum you can visit, but it's still an important part of history. The house shows us how buildings were designed a long time ago.
Its Unique Style
The Leftwich House mixes two cool architectural styles:
- Italianate: This style was popular in the mid-1800s. It often includes tall, narrow windows, wide eaves (the parts of the roof that hang over the walls), and decorative brackets under the eaves.
- Stick-Eastlake: This style came a bit later. It uses lots of decorative wooden trim, often arranged in geometric patterns. Think of it like fancy wooden "sticks" added to the outside of the house for decoration. The Leftwich House has a gable (the triangular part of a wall under a sloping roof) with these special Stick elements.
Special Features
The house has some interesting design parts:
- Front Entrance: The front of the house has four sections, called "bays." You can enter the house through a fancy Victorian front door in one of these sections.
- Porches and Eaves: There's a special Eastlake-style porch that covers the back door. This door opens into the kitchen. Other parts of the roof have separate eaves, which are decorated with brackets and a frieze (a wide band of decoration).
- Roof: The house has a hip roof, which slopes down on all four sides. It's covered mostly with shingles.
A Historic Landmark
In 1975, the Leftwich House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important buildings, sites, and objects in the United States. It means the house is special because of its amazing architecture. Even though no famous people lived there or big events happened, its unique design was enough to make it a historic landmark!
