Lelio Lagorio (born November 9, 1925 – died January 6, 2017) was an important Italian politician. He is best known for being the very first President of Tuscany from 1970 to 1978. He also held several other key roles in the Italian government.

Lelio Lagorio's Early Life and Career

Lelio Lagorio was born in a city called Trieste, in Italy. From a young age, he was interested in politics. He became a member of the Italian Socialist Party, which was a major political group in Italy.

One of his first big jobs was serving as the mayor of Florence. He was the mayor from 1964 to 1965. Florence is a famous city known for its history and art.

Leading the Tuscany Region

After being mayor, Lagorio took on an even bigger role. He became the first-ever president of the Tuscany region. This happened in 1970, and he served in this position until 1978. As president, he helped lead the entire region of Tuscany. This role was like being the governor of a state.

Lagorio's National Role in Italy

Lelio Lagorio also worked at the national level in Italy. He was the first politician from the Italian Socialist Party to become the Italian Minister of Defence. This is a very important job, as the Minister of Defence is in charge of a country's military and security. He held this position from 1980 to 1983.

Later, he also served as the Minister of Sport and Spectacles from 1983 to 1986. This role involved overseeing sports and entertainment in Italy. He was also a leader for his party's members in the Italian Parliament and the European Parliament. The European Parliament is where representatives from different European countries work together.

Lelio Lagorio as a Writer
