Lemonhead is a popular American candy that first came out in 1962. It's made by the Ferrara Candy Company. Lemonheads are round, lemon-flavored candies. They have a sweet coating, a soft sour layer, and a hard candy center.

The Story Behind Lemonhead

The name "Lemonhead" came from Salvatore Ferrara, the candy company's founder. When his grandson, Salvatore II, was born, his head was a bit lemon-shaped. This was because of the special tools used during his birth. Salvatore Ferrara thought this was a great name for a new lemon candy!

How Lemonheads Are Made

Lemonheads are made using a special method called the "cold panned process." This is the same way the company's Red Hots candy is made. In this process, layers of sugar and flavor are slowly added. Each layer builds up until the candy reaches its perfect round shape and size.

Most Lemonheads are about 1 centimeter (less than half an inch) big. But sometimes, larger 3 centimeter (about 1.2 inches) versions are made for single sales. Lemonhead candies are also free of gluten and fat. The Ferrara company makes a huge number of Lemonheads every year – about 500 million!

Other "Head" Candies

Between the 1980s and late 1990s, Ferrara Pan decided to give all their fruit-flavored candies similar names. This included Lemonheads, Grapeheads, Cherryheads, and Appleheads. Today, the classic Lemonhead is the main one you'll find.

Other Candies in the Lemonhead Family

Why Lemonheads Are Popular

Lemonhead candies have been very popular ever since they were first created. In recent years, sour candies like Lemonheads have helped increase sales for companies that make non-chocolate sweets. This shows how much people enjoy their tangy taste!

Lemonheads and Your Health

Sometimes, Lemonheads are suggested for certain health reasons. For example, pregnant women and parenting bloggers sometimes recommend them. The sour taste can help with morning sickness, which is common during pregnancy. Also, people undergoing chemotherapy are sometimes told to suck on sour lemon candies like Lemonheads. This is because the sourness helps make more saliva, which can be helpful.
