Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Lena is a small, unincorporated community located in Miami County, in the state of Ohio in the United States. An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government, but it's still a recognized area where people live.

A Look Back at Lena's History

Lena wasn't always called Lena! When it was first created in 1830, it was known as Elizabethtown. This name was chosen to honor Elizabeth Robbins, who was the wife of one of the first people to settle there.

Later, the community had another name, "Allen's." This name came from Sylvanus Allen, who was the local postmaster at the time. A post office was set up in 1830 under the name Allens. However, in 1883, the name of the post office, and eventually the community, was officially changed to Lena. The post office continued to serve the area until it closed its doors in 1914.

Famous People from Lena

Even small communities can be the birthplace of important people! A. B. Graham, a well-known professor at Ohio State University, was born near Lena in 1868. He made significant contributions in his field.
