Maria Magdalena Filipsson, known as Lena Philipsson, is a famous Swedish singer, songwriter, and TV personality. She was born on January 19, 1966. Lena is well-known for representing Sweden in the 2004 Eurovision Song Contest, where she finished fifth. As of 2024, Lena is the main female singer for the Swedish band Roxette.

Lena's Music Journey
Lena Philipsson was born in Vetlanda, Sweden. Her music career began in 1984 with her first single, "Boy/You Open My Eyes." She became more famous by taking part in Melodifestivalen, Sweden's big music competition, in 1986, 1987, and 1988.
In 1989, Lena had a lot of success with her album My Name. This album included popular songs like "Standing in My Rain," "Why," and "Leave a Light." In the early 1990s, she became even more popular in Sweden. She continued to release albums until 1997.
In 2001, Lena made a big comeback with her stage show, the Lena Philipsson Show. It was so popular that it sold out for two and a half years across Sweden! After a break from releasing albums, she returned in 2004.
Eurovision Success
In 2004, Lena entered Melodifestivalen for the fourth time as a solo artist. Her song was called "Det gör ont" (which means "It Hurts"). She won the competition and went on to represent Sweden at the Eurovision Song Contest 2004. The song was translated into English as "It Hurts" for Eurovision.
The song was composed by Thomas Eriksson. Lena's performance was very energetic. She danced with her microphone stand, which was a unique style. Many people thought she would win the competition. She ended up finishing in 5th place, which was a great achievement!
Her album, Det gör ont en stund på natten men inget på dan, became very popular quickly, selling a lot of copies in just nine days. The song "Det gör ont" was a number one hit. Other popular songs from this album included "Delirium" and "Lena Anthem".
In 2004, a Swedish radio show called Tracks voted her the best female artist and best Swedish artist of the year. Her song "Det gör ont" was also voted the best song.
Later Career and Collaborations
Lena released her album Jag ångrar ingenting in 2005. It sold over 30,000 copies on its first day! In 2006, Lena was the host of Melodifestivalen.
In 2007, she released a new version of her greatest hits album called Lena 20 år. This album included many of her popular songs and a new one called "Jag måste skynda mig på." Lena and fellow artist Orup also created their own show together in Stockholm, which was very successful. They later toured Sweden with the show and released a duet album called Dubbel in 2008.
Lena used to sew her own stage clothes when she started her career. In the early 1990s, she was one of three pop stars featured on stamps in Sweden, alongside Roxette and Jerry Williams.
On May 2, 2024, it was announced that Lena Philipsson would be the new female singer for the band Roxette. She is taking the place of the late Marie Fredriksson. Roxette plans to tour in South Africa, Australia, and Europe starting in February 2025.

Lena Philipsson has been a part of Melodifestivalen six times. This is the competition where Sweden chooses its song for the Eurovision Song Contest. She has performed four times and written songs for other artists twice.
