Early Days and the Post Office
A post office first opened in Lenox on October 2, 1896. At that time, this area was known as Indian Territory. The community got its name from a town called Lenox, Kentucky. However, the post office didn't stay open for very long. It closed its doors on April 15, 1913.
Part of the Choctaw Nation
When Lenox was first established, it was located in a special area. This area was called Wade County. It was part of the Apukshunnubbee District of the Choctaw Nation. The Choctaw Nation is a Native American tribe with a rich history in Oklahoma.
The Lenox Mission
Before the post office, a place called Lenox Mission was set up nearby in 1853. Missions like this were often important centers for education and community life in those times.
