Leolinda de Figueiredo Daltro (born July 14, 1859 – died May 4, 1935) was an important Brazilian woman. She was a teacher, a feminist, and fought for the rights of indigenous people. In 1910, she helped start the Feminine Republican Party. This group worked hard to get Brazilian women the right to vote.

Leolinda Daltro's Early Life and Work

Leolinda Daltro was born in the state of Bahia, Brazil. She later moved to Rio de Janeiro with her second husband and five children. There, she worked as a teacher.

In 1896, Leolinda traveled through the countryside of Brazil. Her goal was to give formal education to Brazil's indigenous peoples. She wanted to help them join the new Brazilian Republic. She settled among the Xerente people in what is now the state of Tocantins.

Education for Indigenous Peoples

Leolinda had a different idea about education for native groups. Unlike religious missions, she believed in a secular education. This means teaching without focusing on religion. She also fought for their land rights. She believed their cultures should be respected.

Founding Schools and Groups

Leolinda returned to Rio de Janeiro in 1897. She founded the Grêmio Patriótico Leolinda Daltro. This group worked to protect the rights of indigenous peoples.

She became friends with Orsina da Fonseca. Orsina was the wife of President Hermes da Fonseca. Together, they started the Escola Orsina da Fonseca. This was a special school where women could learn arts, sciences, and crafts. It helped women gain useful skills.

Leolinda also created the Linha de Tiro Feminino. This was a group for women to learn shooting. Leolinda believed women should be full citizens. She thought they should have the right to defend their country.

Fighting for Women's Right to Vote

The Brazilian Constitution of 1891 did not allow women to vote. Leolinda Daltro wanted to change this.

The Feminine Republican Party

In 1910, Leolinda founded the Partido Republicano Feminino (Feminine Republican Party). She started it with other women, including the poet Gilka Machado. This party fought for women's right to vote. The group was inspired by the British suffragettes. Suffragettes were women who fought for the right to vote.

In 1917, Leolinda's party led a march in Rio de Janeiro. About 90 women took part in this march. They were protesting for women's right to vote.

Raising Awareness for Women's Suffrage

In 1919, Leolinda Daltro ran for intendente (mayor) of Rio. She knew she probably wouldn't win. But she ran to bring attention to the women's suffrage movement. This helped more people learn about the fight for women's voting rights.

After Leolinda's party, other groups also formed to support women's rights. One important group was the Federação Brasileira pelo Progresso Feminino. It was founded in 1922 by Bertha Lutz. Brazilian women finally gained the right to vote in 1932.

Death

Leolinda Daltro died in 1935. She was hit by a car.
