Leon Monde (born January 8, 1895, in New York City – after May 1931) was an American basketball player. He played for the New York Renaissance, often called the "Rens." This team was one of the best basketball teams in the 1920s and 1930s. Leon Monde was one of the first players to join the Rens. He had also played in Negro league baseball, which was a special baseball league for Black players. In 1963, the New York Renaissance team was honored by being added to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

In 1922, a basketball group called the Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA) tried to stop Leon Monde from playing. They said he couldn't play because he had also played professional baseball. Leon Monde's life included more than just sports. In June 1917, his official papers showed he lived in Brooklyn, New York. He worked with machines and helped support his mother, his wife, and a young relative. In April 1930, he and his wife moved from Brooklyn to Eatontown, New Jersey. In 1931, Leon Monde started his own business. He began selling tea and coffee.

The Rens' Lasting Legacy

Even though Leon Monde's exact date of death is not known, his team's legacy lives on. The New York Renaissance team was a groundbreaking group. They broke barriers and showed incredible talent. Their induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1963 honored their place in sports history.
