Leonard Howard (born around 1699 – died 1767) was an English clergyman and writer. He was known for his religious writings and for collecting historical letters. He held several important positions in the church during his lifetime.

Early Life and Education

Leonard Howard was born around the year 1699. Before he became a clergyman, he worked as a clerk in the post office. This job involved handling mail and official documents.

Later, he decided to join the church. He earned advanced degrees, including a Master of Arts (M.A.) and a Doctor of Divinity (D.D.) by 1745. These degrees showed his deep knowledge in religious studies.

Church Career and Roles

Howard held many different roles within the Church of England. In 1742, he worked as a curate in two parishes in London: St John, Southwark, and St Botolph, Aldersgate. A curate is a member of the clergy who helps the main priest in a parish.

At the same time, he also served as a chaplain to Frederick, Prince of Wales. A chaplain is a priest who provides religious services for a specific group, like a royal family or a military unit.

A few years later, by 1745, Howard became a vicar in Devon, a county in England. A vicar is a priest in charge of a parish. He also worked as a lecturer in London at St Magnus, London Bridge, and St James, Garlick Hythe. A lecturer in this context would give sermons or talks on religious topics.

In 1749, the King appointed him to be the rector of St George the Martyr, Southwark. A rector is another type of priest who leads a parish. He continued his lecturing roles alongside this new position. Later, he also became a chaplain to Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, who was the Princess Dowager of Wales.

Later Years and Legacy

Leonard Howard passed away on December 21, 1767, at the age of 68. He was buried in St. George's Church, where he had served as rector. He was known as a popular preacher during his time.

Published Works

Leonard Howard was also a writer. In 1728, he published some poems, including verses about the recovery of Lord Townshend.

His most famous work is titled A Collection of Letters from the original Manuscripts of many Princes, great Personages and Statesmen. This book, published in 1753, contained many old and important letters from famous people. He had planned a second volume, but it was never released. Another edition of this work was published in 1756.

Besides his collection of letters, Howard also published several other books, including:

  • The Newest Manual of Private Devotions (1745): A guide for personal prayers.
  • The Royal Bible; or a complete Body of Christian Divinity (1761): This book included the Holy Scriptures with explanations and notes.
  • The Book of Common Prayer … illustrated and explained (1761): A book that explained the Church of England's prayer book.
  • Miscellaneous Pieces in prose and verse (1765): A collection of various writings, including poems and other interesting pieces.

He also helped revise a book called New Companion for the Festivals and Fasts of the Church of England in 1761.
