The Sweet Story of Leonidas Chocolates
How Leonidas Kestekides Started
The company was founded by a man named Leonidas Kestekides. He was born in 1882 in a place called Niğde, which is in Turkey. When he was young, Leonidas and his brother, Avraam, sold sweet treats like sorbet.
In 1900, Leonidas decided to move to the United States. He met Joanna Emelia Teerlinck there. Later, they moved to Ghent, a city in Belgium.
Winning Awards and Opening Shops
In 1913, a big event called the International Exhibition was held in Ghent. Leonidas showed his sweets there and won a gold medal! This was a huge achievement. After his success, he opened his very first tearoom. It was a place where people could enjoy tea and his delicious sweets.
From Street Seller to Store Owner
For a while, Leonidas sold his products from a cart. But in 1935, the police told him he needed to sell his sweets from a proper store. So, he rented a small room in a building in Brussels. This was a big step for his business.
In 1937, Leonidas officially registered his brand. This meant his company name and logo were protected. His nephew, Basilio Kestekides, helped choose the brand's look. The logo features the image of King Leonidas I of Sparta. This was a way to honor his uncle's Greek background. King Leonidas I was a brave ancient Greek king.
What Makes Leonidas Chocolates Special
Leonidas chocolates are known for their quality. They are made with real Belgian chocolate and cocoa butter. The company makes sure its chocolates do not contain palm oil. This is important because palm oil production can harm the environment.
One of their most famous chocolates is called "Manon." Originally, the Manon had a creamy butter filling on a crunchy base. It was dipped in melted sugar. Later, the recipe changed slightly. The butter cream was placed on a white chocolate praline base instead. A praline is a sweet treat made with nuts and sugar.
Becoming a Royal Supplier
On November 15, 2013, Leonidas received a special honor. The company became a certified supplier to the Belgian royal family. This means the royal family trusts and enjoys Leonidas chocolates!
