Leonor de Vivero (died 1558) was a Spanish noblewoman. She was executed by burning by the Spanish Inquisition because of her religious beliefs.
Leonor de Vivero was married to Pedro Cazalla, who worked for the king. They were part of a group that followed the religious ideas of Francisca Hernández. Leonor de Vivero also hosted a group of people who had different Christian beliefs in her home. She was accused of going against the official Catholic Church.
About Leonor de Vivero
Leonor's family was very important and wealthy. They were counts in Castile and had influence in both the city of Valladolid and at the royal court. Her father, Juan de Vivero, married Constanza Ortiz.
Facing Accusations
Leonor's mother passed away in 1524. However, in 1526, a legal process started against her mother. This happened because a maid reported her for having beliefs that were different from the main church, even though she had previously agreed to follow the church's rules. Other maids supported these claims. Leonor and her brother, Alonso Pérez de Vivero, spoke up for their mother.
Alonso de Vivero was also suspected of holding different religious views. He was known to be in touch with Francisca Hernández. She was a religious leader who was accused of having different ideas, and later, of following the Protestant faith. Francisca Hernández lived in Leonor de Vivero's house with her husband between 1520 and 1527.
