The Story of Leopold's Ice Cream
How It All Began
Leopold's first shop was called Leopold's Purest Ice Cream. It was in a building that used to be a fruit stand. Peter Leopold had just returned from serving in World War I. He and his older brother, George, bought the store. They started selling chocolates, food, and, of course, ice cream. Their younger brother, Basil, joined them in 1925.
Making Super Tasty Ice Cream
The Leopold brothers learned a special way to make ice cream. They used a method called the French pot process. This meant they made small batches of ice cream in their shop. They used their own recipes. They also used fresh cream, milk, and eggs from local farms.
In 1935, the brothers updated their shop. They made it more modern. They also started a better delivery service.
A New Chapter for the Shop
After his father Peter died in 1963, Stratton Leopold took over the business. His mother, Marika, helped him. Stratton closed the shop in 1969. He then moved to Hollywood to become a film producer.
Even after the main shop closed, Leopold's ice cream was still available. Peter and George's younger brother, Basil, kept the tradition alive. He opened Basil Leopold's Restaurant in 1962. It also served delicious ice cream.
Leopold's Reopens and Grows
In August 2004, Leopold's Ice Cream moved to its current spot. This new location is on East Broughton Street in downtown Savannah. People often wait in a long line outside the shop. Stratton Leopold hired a designer to make the new shop look like the old one. It has a classic soda fountain.
The ice cream is still made using the same old recipes. These recipes were created by Stratton's father and uncle. The company also has two other locations. You can find them at the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport.
Famous Fans and Celebrations
Leopold's most famous ice cream flavor is tutti frutti. This was a favorite of Johnny Mercer. He was a famous songwriter from Savannah. He even worked at the shop when he was ten years old. Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter loves the butter pecan flavor. He even wrote the introduction for a book about Leopold's Ice Cream.
The company celebrated its 100th birthday on August 18, 2019. They even had a big party the day before!
