Leppe Island (which is ostrov Leppe in Bulgarian) is a small island covered in ice. It is part of the Barcroft group within the Biscoe Islands. These islands are located in Antarctica, the coldest continent on Earth.
Leppe Island is about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) long. It stretches from the west-southwest to the east-northeast. The island is also about 430 meters (1,410 feet) wide. Its total surface area is around 27.17 hectares, which is about the size of 50 football fields.
Why is it Called Leppe Island?
This icy island is named after a Chilean scientist, Marcelo Leppe Cartes. He is a biologist and was the director of the Chilean Antarctic Institute. The island was named in his honor because he supported the Bulgarian Antarctic program. This shows how different countries work together in Antarctica.
