Lerado, Kansas facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Lerado is a small, unincorporated community located in Reno County, Kansas, in the United States. An unincorporated community is a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does.

Lerado has an interesting story about how it got its name! Early residents wanted to name the community after Laredo, Texas. However, a mistake happened at the post office. The letters "E" and "A" got swapped around, and that's how "Lerado" came to be instead of "Laredo."

History of Lerado

The community of Lerado had its own post office for many years. A post office is where people send and receive mail. The Lerado post office first opened in August 1874.

Interestingly, when it first opened, the post office was not called Lerado. It was known as "Netherland" until May 1884. After that, it officially became the Lerado post office. It continued to serve the community until February 1904, when it closed down.
