Leslie Gordon Cowie (born May 17, 1925 – died May 20, 1995) was a famous Australian rugby league player. He was known as a fantastic lock forward for the amazing South Sydney Rabbitohs teams in the 1950s. Les also played for the Australian national team. In 1994, he received a special award called the Medal of the Order of Australia. This award was for his great contributions to Rugby League football.

Playing for the South Sydney Rabbitohs

Les Cowie was nicknamed "Chicka." He started playing for the South Sydney Rabbitohs in 1947. His career with the Rabbitohs lasted a long time, from 1947 to 1957. During these years, he was part of five teams that won the championship, called a premiership. This means his team was the best in the league five times! In total, he played 178 top-level games for Souths.

In 2004, the South Sydney club honored him. They named him as part of their "South Sydney Dream Team." This special team included 17 great players and a coach. It represented the club's history from 1908 all the way to 2004.

Playing for His Country and State

Les Cowie was a talented player who also represented Australia. He played in six "Test matches" for the Australian national team. These are important international games against other countries.

He went on a tour with the Australian team, called the Kangaroos, to Great Britain in 1948–49. During this tour, he played 20 matches and scored 10 tries. He also toured New Zealand with the Kangaroos in 1949. There, he played in two Test matches against the Kiwis. He also played six other tour matches and scored five tries.

Cowie also played 10 games for the New South Wales (NSW) state team. He was chosen to play for a team representing Sydney. This game was against the French national team during their 1951 tour of Australia and New Zealand. The exciting match ended in a 19-all draw.
