Leslie N. Love is an American politician and government official. She was born on July 8, 1971. Leslie Love is a member of the Democratic Party. She served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2014 to 2020.

Love represented the 10th District. This area includes parts of northwest Detroit and Redford Township. After leaving the state legislature, Governor Gretchen Whitmer appointed Love to the Michigan Natural Resources Commission. She was the first African-American person to serve on this important commission. Love also ran to represent Michigan in the U.S. Senate in the 2024 election.

Her Early Life and Education

Leslie Love grew up in Detroit. She went to Detroit Public Schools and graduated from Thomas M. Cooley High School. She continued her studies at college.

Love earned a bachelor's degree from Siena Heights University. She also received master's degrees from Marygrove College and Wayne State University. She lives in Detroit, Michigan.

Starting Her Career

In 1998, Leslie Love began working in politics. She was a campaign assistant for California Assemblywoman Marguerite Archie-Hudson. She also worked as a field organizer for California Governor Gray Davis.

Before her political roles, Love worked in education. She was the director of theater operations at Marygrove College. She also taught as a professor at Marygrove College and the Wayne County Community College District.

Her Time in Politics

In 2014, Leslie Love ran for a seat in the Michigan House of Representatives. She won the election and served in this role until 2020. She could not run again because of "term limits." This means there is a rule about how many times a person can be elected to the same office.

After her time in the House, Governor Gretchen Whitmer appointed Love to the Michigan Natural Resources Commission. This was a big step because she became the first African-American to serve on this board. The commission helps manage Michigan's natural resources. Love also worked as an assistant deputy director for the Michigan Department of Transportation's (MDOT) Metro-Region.

In 2023, Love announced she would run for the U.S. Senate in the 2024 election. If she had won, she would have been the first Black Senator from Michigan.
