Levon Mkrtchyan (Armenian: Լևոն Մկրտչյան; born February 25, 1953, in Gyumri, Armenia) is a famous Armenian film director. He is especially known for making documentary films about Armenian culture and history. Documentary films are like real-life movies that show true stories and facts.
Levon Mkrtchyan has made many such films, including Davit Anhaght, Mesrop Mashtots, and The Book of Independence. He has won many important awards for his work. One of his top awards was the Lenin Prize, which was the highest award in the Soviet Union. His film The Book of Independence also won a prestigious award at the Golden Eagle film festival.
Levon Mkrtchyan studied filmmaking in Yerevan and Moscow. He made his first short film, The Muses, in 1978. Since then, he has created over thirty-three documentaries. He has filmed many well-known Armenians, like the poet Hovhannes Shiraz and the singer Charles Aznavour. He even filmed Charles Aznavour visiting Armenia after the big earthquake in 1988. Levon Mkrtchyan was also a close friend and film partner with the famous Armenian director Sergei Parajanov. He has rare footage of Parajanov, including his last days.
