The Glucksman is an exciting art museum located in University College Cork in Cork, Ireland. It used to be known as the Lewis Glucksman Gallery. This museum is a great place to see modern art and learn about different artists.

About The Glucksman

The Glucksman first opened its doors to the public on October 14, 2004. The President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, officially opened it. Just a year later, in June 2005, it was named the 'Best Public Building in Ireland'. This award came from the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland.

Award-Winning Design

The museum building itself is a work of art! It was designed by Irish architects O'Donnell + Tuomey. They worked with Arup Consulting Engineers to create it. The design has won many important awards. These include a UK Civic Trust award and an RIBA award. It was also a finalist for the famous 2005 Stirling Prize.

Location and Exhibitions

The Glucksman is easy to find on the campus of University College Cork. It's close to the main entrance of the university. The museum has three floors where art is displayed. It often shows special exhibitions that change over time. These shows explore interesting themes and ideas.

Some past exhibitions have included "Through the Looking Glass: Childhood in Contemporary Photography." Another was "Cooling Out: on the paradox of feminism." They also had "Overtake: the reinterpretation of modern art."

A Museum for Everyone

In 2022, the Glucksman received a special award. It won the European Museum Academy's Art Museum Award. This award recognized how well the museum connects with people. It showed that the Glucksman does a great job serving its community.

The museum is named after Lewis Glucksman. He was a very generous supporter from Wall Street. He helped make the museum possible. The first director of the museum was Fiona Kearney. She is a leader in the arts world.

Overcoming Challenges

In November 2009, Cork experienced heavy floods. The Glucksman, like other buildings at the university, was affected. It had to close for repairs. But it reopened in January 2010, ready to welcome visitors again.
