Early Life and Learning
Lewis Greene started his journey in learning at Amherst College. He earned a special degree called a Bachelor of Arts in 1955. This degree focused on many different subjects. Later, he went to Rockefeller University. There, he earned his PhD in 1962. His PhD was in biochemistry and cell biology. These fields study the tiny parts that make up living things.
A Career in Science
After finishing his PhD, Dr. Greene worked at Brookhaven National Laboratory. He was a researcher there for 12 years. In 1968, he got a special invitation. He was asked to be a visiting scientist in Brazil. This was at the University of São Paulo. He went there as a Fulbright scholar. This program helps people from different countries share knowledge.
Moving to Brazil
Dr. Greene and his family loved Brazil. So, in 1974, they decided to move there for good. He became a professor at the same university. He taught cell and molecular biology. He also became the head of a special center. This center studies proteins. It is called the Center for Protein Chemistry. It is part of Hemocentro de Ribeirão Preto.
Training Future Scientists
Dr. Greene has helped many students learn about science. He has trained over 40 students. These students were working on their master's or doctoral degrees. He also guided many postdoctoral researchers. These are scientists who have finished their PhDs. He has written more than 100 science papers. These papers were published in special journals. Other scientists reviewed his work.
Awards and Recognition
Dr. Greene has received many honors for his work. In 2004, he was given a special award. He was inducted into the Brazilian Order of Scientific Merit. This is a very important award in Brazil. It recognizes people who have done great things in science. He also helped start a group called the Brazilian Association of Scientific Editors. He was even the president of this group.
