Lewis Greene's Early Life and Education

Lewis Greene loved learning from a young age! He earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts, from Amherst College in 1955. Later, in 1962, he earned his PhD (a very high university degree) in biochemistry and cell biology from Rockefeller University.

After finishing his studies, Dr. Greene worked for 12 years at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. This is a big science lab where he was a "tenured researcher." This means he had a permanent and important job there, doing lots of exciting science experiments.

Moving to Brazil and His Work There

In 1968, Dr. Greene received a special invitation to visit Brazil. He went as a Fulbright scholar, which is a program that helps scientists and teachers from different countries work together. He visited the Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto at the University of São Paulo (USP) for a year.

He loved Brazil so much that he and his family decided to move there permanently in 1974! He became a professor at the same university. Today, he is a full professor of cell and molecular biology. He also leads the Center for Protein Chemistry at Hemocentro de Ribeirão Preto, which is a blood center.

Dr. Greene has helped train many future scientists. He has guided more than 40 students who were working on their master's or doctoral degrees. He has also mentored many postdoctoral researchers. He has written over 100 scientific papers that have been published in "peer-reviewed journals." This means other experts in his field checked his work to make sure it was accurate and important.

Awards and Recognition

Dr. Greene has received many honors for his important work. In 2004, he was inducted into the Brazilian Order of Scientific Merit. This is a very special award given to people who have made great contributions to science in Brazil. He also helped start and was president of the Brazilian Association of Scientific Editors. This group helps make sure scientific papers are published correctly.
