Lewis Oglethorpe facts for kids
Lewis Oglethorpe (born February 22, 1681 – died October 30, 1704) was an English politician and soldier. He served as a Member of Parliament, which means he was elected to represent people in the English government.
Lewis Oglethorpe went to school at Middle Temple and Corpus Christi College, Oxford. These were important places for education in his time.
A Young Politician
In 1702, Lewis Oglethorpe became a Member of Parliament for a place called Haslemere. This was a special role because his father, Sir Theophilus Oglethorpe, had also been a Member of Parliament for Haslemere. Later, his brothers, Theophilus, junior and James, also represented Haslemere in Parliament. This shows that serving in government was a family tradition for the Oglethorpes.
A Soldier's Life
Lewis Oglethorpe was also a soldier. In July 1704, he was injured during a big fight called the Battle of Schellenberg. Sadly, he passed away three months later because of these injuries.
