Lewys Daron facts for kids
Lewys Daron was a Welsh poet who lived around the years 1495 to 1530. He was from the Llŷn area in Gwynedd, Wales. Lewys Daron was a professional poet, meaning he wrote poems for a living.
Even though he wasn't one of the most famous poets of his time, his poems give us a good look at what life was like for important families in north-west Wales when the Tudor family started ruling.
Lewys Daron's Life
Lewys Daron was born in a place called Aberdaron in Llŷn. We don't know exactly when he was born. Most of what we know about him comes from the 28 poems he wrote that are still around today.
He was good friends with another important poet from that time, Lewys Môn, who was from Anglesey. Lewys Daron likely passed away in the early 1530s and was buried in a town called Nefyn.
His Poetry and Patrons
Lewys Daron wrote poems for many wealthy families and important people. These people were called his "patrons." He traveled around different areas like Arfon, Meirionnydd, Eifionydd, and Llŷn, which is now the modern county of Gwynedd.
His poems were written in traditional Welsh styles, including awdlau and cywyddau. These are special types of Welsh poetry with their own rules for rhythm and rhyme.
Some of the families he wrote for lived in famous places like Penrhyn Castle, Bodfel, and Glynllifon. He also wrote for families from Cochwillan and Plas Iolyn.
Famous Works
Lewys Daron is perhaps best known for a sad poem he wrote. This poem was an elegy (a poem mourning someone's death) for a very famous poet named Tudur Aled, who died in 1526. Lewys Daron knew Tudur Aled personally.
He also wrote a cywydd (a type of poem) for three ladies from Anglesey. They wanted a millstone for their local church in Nefyn. Another cywydd he wrote was for Sir John Wynn of Gwydir. In this poem, Sir John Wynn asked for a special horse from Dafydd, who was the head of a monastery in Beddgelert.
Lewys Daron also wrote a poem praising Pîrs Conwy, who was an important church leader in St Asaph.
