Lexington, Maine facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Lexington, Maine is a small area in Somerset County, Maine, United States. It's part of a larger "unorganized territory" called Central Somerset. This means it doesn't have its own local government like a regular town. In 2000, Central Somerset had 336 people living there.

A Look Back at Lexington's History

Lexington wasn't always called Lexington! It was first known as Gilman Pond Plantation. The first person who tried to settle here was Isaac Elder in 1804. He planted a garden, but a very early frost ruined his crops. Because of this, he decided to move away to New Portland.

Who Were the First Settlers?

In 1806, Isaac Elder's father-in-law, David Quint, took over the farm. He became the first person to live there permanently. The owner of the land, Governor King, had agents who helped sell land and manage his farm and mill. David Quint was one of these agents, followed by Henry Morgan and then Abraham Smith.

How Lexington Got Its Name

Governor King wanted to name the new area "Frazier." This was to honor his wife, Anne Frazier, from Boston. He had already named another town, Kingfield, after himself. However, the people living there had a different idea! They sent a request to change the name to Lexington. They wanted it to go along with Concord, Maine, which had become an official town in 1826. So, the area officially became the town of Lexington in March 1833.
