Leylâ Erbil (born in 1931 – died on July 19, 2013) was an important Turkish writer. She was known for writing both novels and short stories.
Leylâ Erbil's Early Life
Leylâ Erbil was born in the big city of Istanbul, Turkey. She finished her high school studies there. After high school, she started studying English Language and Literature at Istanbul University.
However, she got married during her last year at the university. Because of this, she did not finish her degree. She lived in different cities like Ankara and Izmir for a while. In 1961, she moved back to Istanbul.
Her Journey as a Writer
Leylâ Erbil began her writing career by creating short stories. These are shorter pieces of fiction, often focusing on a few characters or events. Later, after 1971, she also started writing longer books called novels.
Her writing style was unique and she explored many different ideas in her works.
Joining Important Groups
Leylâ Erbil was not just a writer; she was also active in groups that supported artists and writers. She helped start two important organizations:
- The Union of Artists of Turkey
- The Writers Syndicate of Turkey
She was also a member of PEN International. This is a worldwide group of writers who work to promote literature and freedom of expression. She also belonged to the Workers' Party of Turkey, which was a political group.
Her Final Years
Leylâ Erbil passed away in Istanbul on July 19, 2013. She was in Or-Ahayim Balat Hospital in the Fatih district.
