Li Li-hua (Chinese: 李麗華) was a famous Chinese actress. She was born on July 17, 1924, and passed away on March 19, 2017. Many people knew her as a star from the Shaw Brothers Studio. She was married to Hong Kong actor and director Yan Jun.
Li Li-hua's Early Life and Career
Li Li-hua was born in Shanghai, China. Her father, Li Guifang, was a well-known Beijing Opera actor. When Li Li-hua was 12 years old, she moved to Beijing. There, she began to study Beijing Opera, following in her father's footsteps.
Four years later, she moved back to Shanghai. She joined the Yihua Film Company. Her very first movie was called 3 Smiles. It came out in two parts in 1940. This was the start of her amazing acting journey.
A Long and Successful Acting Career
Li Li-hua had a very long career in movies. She acted for 38 years! During this time, she starred in more than 120 films. Her last movie was New Dream of the Red Chamber in 1978. After this film, she decided to retire from acting. She then moved to the United States.
Awards and Recognition
Li Li-hua received many important awards for her acting. In 1969, she won the Best Actress award at the Golden Horse Film Festival and Awards. This was for her role in the movie Storm over the Yangtze River.
Years later, in 2015, she was honored again. She received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 52nd Golden Horse Awards. This award celebrates actors who have had a huge impact on cinema throughout their lives. The next year, in April 2016, she also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hong Kong Film Awards.
Li Li-hua passed away on March 19, 2017, when she was 92 years old. She is remembered as a true legend of Chinese cinema.
