Liam grew up in Belfast and played for a youth team called Immaculata. He went to St Joseph's Primary School and St Mary's Grammar School. Cliftonville noticed his talent and signed him. After playing for their reserve team, he became a regular player for the first team in the 2009–10 season.
Playing in Germany: Werder Bremen
In August 2010, Liam signed with a German club called Werder Bremen. However, his time there was short. He only played three games for their reserve team before leaving the club in October 2011.
Back to Cliftonville
Liam returned to Cliftonville in January 2012. This was a very successful period for him. In the 2012–13 season, he helped Cliftonville win the league title for the first time since 1998. He was also the top scorer in the league with 29 goals.
Because of his great performance, he won two big awards: the Ulster Footballer of the Year and the Northern Ireland Football Writers' Player of the Year. He won another league title with Cliftonville in 2013–14, scoring 21 more goals.

Time at Burton Albion
On June 20, 2017, Liam became the most expensive player ever bought by EFL Championship team Burton Albion. He signed a three-year contract. However, soon after joining, he got a serious knee injury during a friendly game. This kept him out for most of the 2017–18 season.
He made his return on February 3, 2018, scoring a goal in a game against Aston Villa. On April 21, Liam scored a winning goal in injury time that caused Sunderland to be relegated from the league.
Joining Heart of Midlothian
