Liath Macha and Dub Sainglend facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Liath Macha ("grey of Macha") and Dub Sainglend ("black of Saingliu") were two amazing chariot-horses belonging to the famous hero Cúchulainn. They are important characters in the Ulster Cycle, a collection of old Irish myths and legends.

Cúchulainn's Magical Horses

These special horses appeared to Cúchulainn from a pool called Linn Liaith. This pool was in the mountains of Sliab Fuait. They were a gift from either the goddess Macha or her sister, the Morrígan.

Cúchulainn, being a brave hero, immediately jumped onto their backs. The horses then ran all over Ireland for a whole day! But no matter how fast or far they ran, they couldn't throw Cúchulainn off. After this incredible journey, the horses became completely tame and loyal to him.

Loyalty to the End

Liath Macha and Dub Sainglend showed incredible loyalty to Cúchulainn, especially on the day he died. As Cúchulainn's enemies gathered for a big battle, Liath Macha refused to let Láeg, Cúchulainn's charioteer, harness him to the chariot.

Liath Macha would only allow Cúchulainn himself to harness him. The horse even wept tears of blood, as if he knew what was coming.

The Battle and Sacrifice

During the battle, Liath Macha was hit by the second spear thrown by Lugaid mac Con Roí. The first spear had sadly killed Láeg, Cúchulainn's charioteer. After being hit, Liath Macha returned to the pool of Linn Liaith, where Cúchulainn had first found him.

Dub Sainglend bravely continued to pull the chariot. But then, Lugaid's third spear hit Cúchulainn, causing him to fall from the chariot. Even though Cúchulainn was down, Dub Sainglend kept running.

However, Liath Macha returned to protect his master. He fought fiercely, killing fifty enemies with his teeth and thirty with each of his hooves!

After Cúchulainn's Death

After Cúchulainn finally died, Liath Macha played one last important role. He led another hero, Conall Cernach, to Cúchulainn's body. Conall then chased after Cúchulainn's killers and got revenge for his friend.

Liath Macha and Dub Sainglend are remembered as symbols of loyalty and bravery in Irish legends.
