What Does It Look Like?
The Rough Blazing Star is a tall and striking plant. It can grow anywhere from 1 foot (30 cm) to almost 6 feet (180 cm) high! Its stem feels rough because it has short, stiff hairs. The leaves often feel rough too.
Its Unique Flowers
The flowers of the Rough Blazing Star are very special. They grow in a tall, straight cluster called a raceme. Each cluster has many purple, button-like flower heads. These flower heads are usually short-stalked or don't have stalks at all. What's cool is that they bloom from the top of the stem downwards!
Leaves and Stem
This plant has many leaves that grow all along its stem. They are narrow and grow in an alternate pattern. This means they don't grow directly opposite each other on the stem.
Where Does It Grow?
You can find the Rough Blazing Star in many places across the mid to eastern United States. It loves sunny spots! It often grows in dry prairies and savannas. These are open grasslands with scattered trees.
When Does It Bloom?
The Rough Blazing Star puts on its beautiful purple show from mid-August through September. This makes it a late-summer bloomer. After the flowers fade, the seeds become ripe in October and November. Sometimes, you can even buy these plants from special suppliers if you want to grow them in your garden!
How Does It Reproduce?
Like many plants, the Rough Blazing Star reproduces using seeds. After the flowers are pollinated, they produce seeds. These seeds ripen in the fall, usually in October and November. Once the seeds are ready, they can spread and grow new plants.
