Libanus Chapel was an important old building in Cwmbwrla, Swansea. It was so special that it was given a 'grade II listed' status. This means it was protected because of its history and architecture.

The first chapel on this spot was built in the mid-1700s. Later, a new, bigger chapel was built in 1867. At that time, more than 600 people attended services there! The land for the chapel was given by a wealthy businessman named Sir John Morris, 1st Baronet.

The chapel started as a smaller part of another chapel called Mynyddbach Chapel. But around 1826, after a time of renewed religious interest, it became its own independent chapel. In 1906, more space was added to the building. Sadly, fewer people attended over the years, and the chapel closed its doors in 2000.

What Happened to Libanus Chapel?

In the early morning of Saturday, January 21, 2012, a fire broke out at the chapel. It was thought the fire was started on purpose. The blaze was discovered at 4:20 AM. At its worst, 50 firefighters worked hard to put out the flames. Because of the serious damage from the fire, the remaining parts of the building had to be taken down for safety reasons.
