Library of Anglo-Catholic Theology facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Library of Anglo-Catholic Theology was a special collection of religious books published in the 1800s by John Henry Parker. This collection focused on important writers from the Church of England who followed a style of Christianity called Anglo-Catholicism. It helped bring back many old books from the 1600s, especially those by a group known as the Caroline Divines.

The idea for this "Library" started around 1841. It was connected to a big religious movement called the Oxford Movement, which began in 1833. Some people involved in editing these books, like William John Copeland and Charles Crawley, were part of this movement. However, the Library's goals soon became different from another group within the Oxford Movement called the Tractarians.

Over about twelve years, the Library published 95 books by 20 different writers. The original plan was to include even more authors! This project was also started as a response to another group called the Parker Society, which was publishing its own set of religious books.

Important Authors and Their Works

The Library of Anglo-Catholic Theology included works by many significant religious thinkers. These books were carefully edited to make them available to more readers.

Some of the important authors whose works were published in this collection include:

  • William Beveridge (1637-1708): His works were published in 12 volumes.
  • John Bramhall: His writings were collected into 5 volumes.
  • John Cosin (1594-1672): His works made up 5 volumes.
  • William Laud (1573-1645): An important figure whose writings were also part of the collection.
  • John Pearson (1613-1686): His shorter works were included.
  • Thomas Wilson (1663-1755): Another key author in the series.

In total, the Library published works by 20 different authors, making their important religious ideas available to a new generation.
