The Adventure Continues
This story picks up right after the last book, Hollow City. Jacob, Emma, and their dog friend Addison are stuck in a phone booth. Jacob soon finds out he has a new, amazing power: he can control the scary hollowgasts! He uses this power to make a hollow back off, helping them escape.
Journey to Devil's Acre
After their escape, the group rests and gets ready for a big journey. Their goal is to rescue their friends and the kidnapped ymbrynes. They figure out where their friends might be held. With help from a boatsman named Sharon, they cross a dirty river called Fever Ditch. This leads them to a tough town known as Devil's Acre. This place is controlled by the wights.
Strange Discoveries in Devil's Acre
In Devil's Acre, Addison gets captured. Jacob and Emma are shocked to see many peculiar people trapped there. Some are even put on display or for sale. The worst part is that many peculiars are using a special substance called ambrosia. This substance is poured into their eyes and is supposed to make them super strong. It leads to fights between peculiars and hollows.
While trying to stay hidden, Jacob and Emma are invited into a man's house. This man, Bentham, turns out to be Miss Peregrine's brother. He also caused the big explosion that created hollows and wights a long time ago.
Uncovering Secrets
Bentham wants to prove he can help. He shares secret information about the wights. He helps Jacob and Emma get into the wights' main building. They use a hollow that Jacob saved from a fighting ring. The two sneak inside and avoid being caught.
They then find a hospital area where many peculiars are having their special powers taken away. This includes Melina and the echolocators. But their other peculiar friends are nowhere to be found yet.
Rescuing Friends and Ymbrynes
Emma and Jacob manage to stop the power-draining operations. They successfully find their friends in a basement cell and free them. Sadly, Fiona is not there; she was thought to have died earlier. Without time to be sad, the group finds the room where all the ymbrynes are kept.
However, Caul, a powerful wight, already knows Jacob and Emma are there. He threatens to release many hollows unless Jacob helps him. Caul wants Jacob to find special soul jars hidden in the legendary Library of Souls. This library was rumored to hold peculiar souls after death. It was cut off from the world after a big war.
The Library of Souls
Jacob refuses to help Caul. Instead, he uses his power to control the hollows! The group then frees Miss Peregrine and the other trapped ymbrynes. They fight their way out of the building. The peculiar children fight well, but Bentham betrays them. He wanted to help Miss Peregrine but sought revenge when she wouldn't forgive him.
Caul takes the peculiars and ymbrynes hostage. He forces them to go with him to the Library of Souls, which he found. Here, Jacob discovers that, like his grandfather, he is the only one who can see the hidden soul jars. With his friends held hostage, Jacob gets the most powerful soul jars for Caul and his brother. Other wights die from using the souls incorrectly.
Miss Peregrine's brothers grow into giant monsters and fight each other. But thanks to a special recipe Bentham gave Jacob, the library collapses on Caul and Bentham.
Back Home and New Beginnings
With Miss Peregrine and Emma, Jacob returns home. His parents and a new psychiatrist are waiting, wanting to know what happened. Miss Peregrine and Emma explain everything. Then, Miss Peregrine makes Jacob's parents forget what they just heard.
Jacob and Emma decide to stay in touch. But Jacob's parents find some of Emma's letters and think Jacob wrote them to himself. They plan to send him to a special school for his mind. But on the night they are supposed to leave, Miss Peregrine and her peculiar children visit Jacob. This proves to his shocked parents that the peculiars are real!
It's also revealed that the peculiars' internal time clocks are now normal. They no longer have to worry about aging quickly when outside their time loops. They will now age like regular people in the present. The book ends with Emma and Jacob deciding to remain friends and take things slowly with their friendship, now that they have time.
