About Ransom Riggs

Early Life and School

Ransom Riggs was born in Maryland in 1979. He grew up on a very old farm. Later, his family moved to Florida. There, he went to a special school for gifted students.

He loved learning about books and stories. He studied English literature at Kenyon College in Ohio. He was good friends with another famous author, John Green, during his college years. After that, he went to the University of Southern California. He studied filmmaking there.

How He Started Writing

Ransom Riggs began his career by making short films for the internet. He also wrote articles for a popular website called Mental Floss. These jobs helped him get a chance to write a book. His first book was The Sherlock Holmes Handbook. It was released in 2009. This book was connected to the Sherlock Holmes movie that came out that year.

The Peculiar Children Series

Ransom Riggs had a unique hobby. He collected old, unusual photographs. These were pictures of everyday people from the past. He showed them to his publisher, Quirk Books. He thought they could be used in a picture book.

An editor at the publisher had a great idea. They suggested that Riggs use the photos to create a story. This idea led to his most famous book, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. The book quickly became a huge hit. It appeared on The New York Times Best Seller list. In 2016, it was even turned into a movie. The film was called Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.

He also published another book inspired by old photos. It was called Talking Pictures and came out in 2012.
