About Ransom Riggs's Early Life and School

Ransom Riggs was born in Maryland in 1979. He grew up on a very old farm that was 200 years old! Later, he moved to Florida and went to a special school called Pine View School for the Gifted.

He loved learning and went to Kenyon College in Ohio. There, he studied English literature. He was good friends with another famous author, John Green. After college, Ransom Riggs went to the University of Southern California to study film.

Ransom Riggs's Career as a Writer

Ransom Riggs started his career by making short films for the internet. He also wrote for a popular website called Mental Floss. These jobs helped him get a chance to write a book called The Sherlock Holmes Handbook. This book was released to go along with the 2009 Sherlock Holmes movie.

How Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children Began

Ransom Riggs had a special hobby: he collected old, unusual photographs. These were not just any photos; they were called vernacular photographs, meaning they were taken by everyday people. He showed these photos to his publisher, Quirk Books. He thought they could be used in a picture book.

An editor at the publishing company had a great idea. They suggested that Ransom Riggs use the strange photos to create a story. He used the pictures as inspiration to write a whole new world!

The book he created was Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. It quickly became a huge success. The book even made it onto The New York Times Best Seller list. In 2016, it was turned into a movie with the same name, directed by Tim Burton.
