The Liceu bombing was a terrible event that happened in Barcelona, Spain. On November 7, 1893, an anarchist threw two bombs from a balcony inside the Liceu opera house. This attack sadly killed 20 people.

This bombing was done in response to an earlier event. In 1893, a man named Paulí Pallàs was put to death. He had tried to assassinate the Captain General of Catalonia, Arsenio Martínez Campos. Santiago Salvador, who was a friend of Pallàs, was arrested in January 1894 for the Liceu bombing.

What Happened After the Bombing?

After the bombing, a leader named Valeriano Weyler was put in charge. His job was to find anarchists. He declared martial law, which meant the military took control. Hundreds of workers were arrested. Some of them confessed to the Liceu bombing after being questioned very harshly. Even after Santiago Salvador was arrested, many workers stayed in prison, and six of them were put to death.
