Early Life and Moving to Canada
Lido Pimienta was born in Barranquilla, Colombia. When she was six years old, her father passed away. Later, she moved to Canada, first living in London, Ontario. She then settled in Toronto, where she lives now.
Music Career and Albums
Pimienta released her first album, Color, in 2010. After that, she took some time to study art criticism and learn more about making music.
La Papessa and Big Awards
In 2016, she released her second album, La Papessa. She produced this experimental album herself. That same year, she also worked with the group A Tribe Called Red on their album We Are the Halluci Nation.
La Papessa was a huge success! It won the 2017 Polaris Music Prize, which is Canada's top music award chosen by a jury. The Globe and Mail newspaper even called her "the future of Canadian rock and roll" and named her "artist of the year."
Important Performances and Messages
During a concert at the Halifax Pop Explosion music festival in 2017, Lido Pimienta asked "brown girls to the front" and requested that white audience members move back. She often does this at her shows to create a welcoming space for women of color. Some people in the audience found this request unfair. The festival organizers later apologized to Pimienta. They said they would offer more training on fairness and anti-racism.
Miss Colombia and Heritage
In 2020, Pimienta released her next album, Miss Colombia. The album's title was inspired by a moment at the 2015 Miss Universe beauty pageant. This event made her think deeply about her Colombian background and pride. The album Miss Colombia explores these feelings, celebrating and also looking critically at her heritage.
Lido TV Show
Lido Pimienta has also created a television show called Lido TV. The show first appeared at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022. Later, it became available to watch on CBC Gem. LIDO TV is a variety show that talks about important topics like feminism, colonialism, privilege, and beauty. It includes documentary parts, interviews, funny skits, and puppet shows. Pimienta hosts, writes, and produces the show herself.
Art and Other Work
Besides being a musician, Lido Pimienta is also a visual artist and a curator. This means she helps organize art shows. Her art often explores ideas about gender, race, being a mother, and identity. Her work has been shown in art exhibitions, like FEMINISTRY IS HERE in Toronto.
Personal Life and Background
Lido Pimienta is a single parent. She has a mixed background, with Afro-Colombian and Wayuu roots. She is good friends with Canadian singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado and Li Saumet, the lead singer of the Colombian band Bomba Estéreo.
