The Story of Lifeblood
What is Darkside?
In Lifeblood, the main character, Jonathan Starling, is still living in a mysterious place called Darkside. He is with his friend, Elias Carnegie. Darkside is a secret city hidden within London. It is a very old and dangerous place. The city is ruled by the descendants of a famous historical criminal known as Jack the Ripper.
When the current ruler of Darkside dies, a special event happens. It is called the Blood Succession. This is a fierce competition to decide who will be the next ruler. It is a very important and dangerous tradition in Darkside.
A New Mystery Unfolds
Jonathan and Carnegie soon find themselves in a new mystery. It quickly turns into a murder investigation. They are asked to find out who an unknown victim is. This victim was killed in the same way as another important person in Darkside. That earlier murder happened twelve years ago. The first victim was a secret heir to the Ripper family.
Jonathan has learned a lot about Darkside's history. He wonders if the new murder is connected to the old one. Could it be part of a bigger plan?
Searching for Answers
Jonathan and Carnegie get help from a newspaper in Darkside. While working with them, Jonathan learns something surprising. His missing mother used to be a reporter for this very newspaper. She disappeared around the same time the famous old murder happened.
Jonathan believes these two events must be linked. He hopes that by solving the new crime, he can also find out what happened to his mother. This makes the mystery even more personal for him.
Discoveries and Dangers
To find more clues, Jonathan travels back to Lightside. This is the normal world outside of Darkside. There, he discovers that a character named Lucien Fox (also known as Brother Fleet) is one of the two remaining Ripper heirs.
Jonathan then returns to Darkside with Carnegie. They go to a private place called the Cain Club. Suddenly, Lucien changes into a powerful Black Phoenix. He attacks Jonathan and Carnegie. In the middle of the fight, a character named Marianne arrives. She reveals that she is also a Ripper. After this shocking reveal, everyone leaves the scene. The mystery continues to deepen for Jonathan.
