About the LMEH
The Liga Mexicana Elite de Hockey (LMEH) began on October 2, 2010. Its main goal is to help Mexico become a strong competitor in international ice hockey. The league wants to improve the skill level of Mexican players.
Having the best Mexican players in the league helps inspire younger players. These players might one day join the Mexican national team. They could then play against strong teams from other countries.
How Teams Are Formed
The first LMEH season was in 2010–2011. It started with four teams: Mayan Astronomers, Aztec Eagle Warriors, Teotihuacan Priests, and Zapotec Totems. Players were chosen for these teams through a special process called a "draft."
In the draft, players were ranked by skill level (AAA, AA, A). Then, each team took turns picking players. This helped make sure all four teams had a similar skill level.
Before the playoffs, teams could trade players. This gave them a chance to make their team even better.
How Games Are Played
Teams play each other four times in a "round robin" system. After these games, the team with the most points automatically goes to the final game. The teams in second and third place play a series of games. The winner of that series then plays the first-place team in the finals.
The champion is decided in a "best-of-three" series. This means the first team to win two games becomes the league champion.
Future Plans for the League
The Mexican Sports Federation Ice Hockey, AC, plans to grow the league. For the second season, they wanted to add a fifth team. This new team would be made up of newer players.
The new team could pick some players from the four original teams. However, the existing teams could protect some of their best players. The league plans to add a new team each year until there are eight teams.
The Federation also hopes to offer cash prizes to winning teams. In the future, they want to pay salaries to all players. They are also looking into bringing foreign players to join the LMEH teams.
In 2023-24, a player named Panagiotis Mavridis joined the Aztec Eagle Warriors. He played his first game with them in a 2-1 shootout victory.
Teams in the LMEH
All the teams in the LMEH are located in Mexico City. Their games are played at the Centro Santa Fe ice rink.
