The Story of Lightning Run
Kentucky Kingdom's Journey
In February 2010, the theme park Kentucky Kingdom closed its doors. The company that owned it, Six Flags, couldn't agree on a new rental deal for the park's land. This was a sad time for many roller coaster fans.
Later that year, in May 2010, a local investor named Ed Hart stepped in. He had owned the park before and wanted to open it again. He tried for over a year to work out a new agreement. However, these talks ended in September 2011.
New Ideas for the Park
At the start of 2012, the owners of Holiday World showed interest. They hoped to run Kentucky Kingdom and even planned to rename it Bluegrass Boardwalk. But these plans also didn't work out and ended in June 2012.
Building Lightning Run
In August 2012, Ed Hart returned with a new idea. He proposed building a brand new roller coaster for the park. At first, it was going to be a very expensive ride.
However, the plans changed a bit. They decided on a different type of roller coaster that would cost about $7 million. A company called Chance Rides was chosen to build this new ride. They created a completely new model of roller coaster just for Kentucky Kingdom, which became known as Lightning Run.
