Liliana Borcea is a smart math professor at the University of Michigan. She studies how to use computers to solve math problems, especially about how waves, like light or radio signals, travel. This field is called scientific computing and applied mathematics.

Her Journey in Math and Science

Liliana Borcea was born in Romania. She earned a degree in applied physics from the University of Bucharest in 1987. Applied physics is about using physics ideas to solve real-world problems.

She then moved to the United States to study at Stanford University. There, she focused on scientific computing and computational mathematics. She earned her master's degree in 1992 and her doctorate (Ph.D.) in 1996. A doctorate is the highest university degree you can get.

After finishing her studies, she did more research at the California Institute of Technology. This is called postdoctoral research. In 1996, she joined the math department at Rice University. She became a special professor there in 2007.

In 2013, Professor Borcea moved to the University of Michigan. She became the Peter Field Collegiate Professor. She also helped guide a math research center called the Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM).

Awards and Special Honors

Professor Borcea has received many important awards for her work. In 2017, she was chosen as the AWM-SIAM Sonia Kovalevsky Lecturer. This honor is given to women who have made big contributions in math.

She was recognized for her amazing work on how waves move through different materials. She also helped develop ways to create images using waves, like in medical scans.

In 2018, she became a member of the SIAM Fellows. SIAM stands for the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Being a SIAM Fellow means you are a top expert in your field.

Most recently, in 2023, she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. This is a very old and respected group that honors leaders in science, arts, and public affairs.
