Lillian Spender (born Lillian Headland) was an English writer who lived from 1835 to 1895. She was also known as Mrs. John Kent Spender. She started her writing career by contributing to important magazines. Later, she became well-known for writing many novels.

Early Life and Education

Lillian Headland was born on February 22, 1835. Her father, Edward Headland, was a famous doctor in London. Her mother's father was from Spain. Lillian went to Queen's College in Harley Street, London. This was a good school for girls at the time.

Writing Career and Life

In 1858, Lillian married John Kent Spender. He was a doctor at the Mineral Water Hospital in Bath. After she got married, Lillian started focusing on writing.

She wrote for several important magazines, like the London Quarterly Review and the English Woman's Journal. After 1869, she mostly wrote novels. She wrote many books that people enjoyed reading.

Besides writing, Lillian Spender was also very active in her community. She helped with education and social work in Bath. She continued this work until her health became poor.

Lillian Spender passed away in Bath on May 4, 1895. She had eight children, and seven of them were still alive when she died. Two of her sons, J. A. Spender and Harold Spender, became journalists in London.
