The Lima Memorial Hall is a really old and important building in Lima, Ohio. It's a special place where people go to watch shows and concerts. For many years, it also served as the city hall, which is like the main office for the city government.
This beautiful building was finished in 1908. It was designed by a company called Dawson & McLaughlin. They gave it a fancy style known as Beaux-Arts architecture. This style often includes grand designs and impressive details.
A Grand Building
One of the most amazing parts of Lima Memorial Hall is its huge marble staircase. This staircase goes from the main entrance area, called the foyer, up to a wide open balcony on the second floor. It makes the building feel very grand and important.
The building was named to honor local military veterans. It stands proudly on the edge of downtown Lima.
A Stage for Stars
Over the years, Lima Memorial Hall has hosted many famous performers. Imagine seeing John Philip Sousa's band play there! Other well-known artists like Victor Borge also performed on its stage.
Big groups like the Detroit Symphony Orchestra have played their music in the hall. Singers from famous opera companies, like those from Boston and Chicago, have also shared their talents there. It has truly been a center for arts and culture in Lima.
From City Hall to Arts Center
For a long time, Lima Memorial Hall was both a performing arts center and the city hall. This meant that important city meetings and offices were located inside. However, the city government offices are now in a different building. They moved to Public Square, which is in the very center of Lima.
Today, Memorial Hall mainly focuses on being a place for performances and events. It continues to be an important part of the community's cultural life.
A Recognized Landmark
In 1979, Lima Memorial Hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of buildings, sites, and objects that are important in American history. The building earned this honor because of its unique architecture. Its long history and importance to the local area also helped it qualify.
When it was listed in 1979, the building had not been made bigger. However, its entry doors and windows were all replaced in 1971. This helped keep the building in good shape while preserving its historic look.
