"Deșteaptă-te, române!" (meaning "Awaken, Romanian!") is the official national anthem of Romania. A national anthem is a special song that represents a country and its people. This powerful song was written during a time of big changes in Romania.
The words for the anthem were created by Andrei Mureșanu in 1848. The music was already a popular tune, chosen by Gheorghe Ucenescu. The song was first published during the 1848 revolution. It was initially called "Un răsunet", which means "An echo". It was first sung in public in June 1848 in the city of Brașov. People quickly accepted it as a song for the revolution, and it was soon renamed "Deșteaptă-te, române!".

The Anthem's Important Role
This song carries a strong message about freedom and love for one's country. Because of its powerful meaning, it has been sung during many important moments in Romanian history. This includes the 1989 anti-communist revolution, when people fought for their freedom.
After the 1989 revolution, "Deșteaptă-te, române!" officially became Romania's national anthem. This happened on January 24, 1990. It replaced the previous anthem, "Trei culori" (meaning "Three colors"), which was used during the communist era.
National Anthem Day
To celebrate this important song, July 29 is now known as "National Anthem Day" (Ziua Imnului național) in Romania. It is a special day each year when Romanians remember the meaning and history of their anthem.
Its Use in Moldova
"Deșteaptă-te, române!" was also used in the Moldavian Democratic Republic between 1917 and 1918. This was a short period when Moldova was trying to become independent. Later, from 1991 to 1994, "Deșteaptă-te, române!" was even the national anthem of Moldova. However, it was later replaced by Moldova's current anthem, "Limba noastră" (meaning "Our language").
