Lime Lake, also known as Whitehead Pond, is a small, man-made lake in Sarasota, Florida. It was created to help control rainwater. This helps prevent flooding in the nearby areas. The freshwater pond is about 3 acres (1.2 hectares) in size. It is located at the eastern edge of 22nd Street in Sarasota.
History of Lime Lake
This area was once owned by Wilmon Whitehead. He bought the land in 1947 after returning from World War II. Mr. Whitehead and his family lived there for many years. The original home he built still stands by the lake today.
Over time, Wilmon Whitehead sold the pond and much of his land. He sold it to Sarasota County. The county then made some changes to the land. They built a school nearby. They also turned the pond and the land around it into a public park.
From Private Pond to Public Park
The area became known as Lime Lake Park. This means people can now visit and enjoy the lake and its surroundings. Even though the county owns the park, the Whitehead family still owns some land that wraps around Lime Lake.
