Limerick is a small, quiet place in Bureau County, Illinois, United States. It's what we call an "unincorporated community," which means it's a group of homes and buildings that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. You can find Limerick along Illinois Route 26, just north of a bigger town called Princeton.
The Story of Limerick
Limerick was first planned out in 1857. A pioneer named George Limerick decided to create this community. That same year, a post office was opened in Limerick, making it easier for people to send and receive mail. The post office stayed open for many years, until 1892.
In its early days, Limerick was a busy little place. It had important buildings like a meeting house where people could gather, a store to buy supplies, and a blacksmith shop where metal items were made and repaired. There was also a doctor to help people when they were sick, and a Methodist church for worship. About 15 to 20 homes were in Limerick during this time.
