Lincoln Park Gun Club facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Lincoln Park Gun Club was a special place in Chicago, Illinois, where people could practice shooting sports. It was started in 1912 by important people from Chicago, like Oscar F. Mayer, W. C. Peacock, and P. K. Wrigley. The famous musician John Philip Sousa even played music at the club's opening party! The club was located in a beautiful area called Lincoln Park, close to Diversey Harbor.

The main activities at the club were skeet shooting and trap shooting. These are sports where people use shotguns to shoot at clay targets that fly through the air. Sometimes, people also went waterfowl hunting there.

A Look Back at the Lincoln Park Gun Club

How the Club Started

The Lincoln Park Gun Club began over 100 years ago, in 1912. It was first a private club, meaning only members could use it. Later, it became open to the public. Its address was 2901 N. Lake Shore Drive, right by the lake.

Concerns About the Lake

In 1991, a problem came up. The Illinois Attorney General, Roland Burris, took the club to court. He said the club might be making the lake dirty with lead from the shotgun pellets. Lead can be harmful if it gets into the environment.

The land where the club was located belonged to the Chicago Park District. They decided to close the club right away. They wanted the club to prove it was safe and to pay for cleaning up the lake. Club members felt this was unfair and believed the shutdown was not really about pollution.

What Happened Next

The gun club tried to fight the shutdown in court, but their case was not successful. The next summer, in 1992, most of the club's buildings were taken down by the park district.

However, a few years later, in 1995, the old clubhouse was given a new life! It was reopened as a community center for everyone to enjoy. Before this, the city had paid for a study to check the soil and sand where the club used to be. The study, done by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, found that there was no pollution that would harm people or animals in the lake. Even though there was lead and clay targets at the bottom of the lake, it was not a health risk.
