Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Lincoln Theatre Guild is a group that puts on plays and musicals for fun! It's a non-profit organization, which means they use any money they make to put on more shows. They started in 1981 and perform in Lincoln County, North Carolina, and the areas around it.

A Look Back: The Guild's Story

The Lincoln Theatre Guild began in 1981 with just 15 people who loved theater. Their very first activity was a workshop to learn acting skills. After that, they put on their first play, called Harvey. Barrie Howard was the first president of the group.

One special early play was Prelude to Victory. This musical drama told the story of a battle from the Revolutionary War that happened nearby. In 1983, a successful show called Scrooge helped the Guild get enough money to keep going strong. Scrooge was a musical based on Charles Dickens' famous story, A Christmas Carol.

The group grew a lot during the 1980s. They performed many different types of shows, including funny comedies, serious dramas, and lively musicals. Some of the plays they put on were Mouse Trap, Harvey, and You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown.

In 1988, the Guild moved its offices and started performing shows at the Lincoln Cultural Center. This building in Lincolnton, North Carolina used to be a church but was made new for arts groups. By 1990, the Guild was putting on a big musical every summer at the Lincoln Citizens Center. They also performed 3 to 4 smaller plays each year at the Cultural Center.

In 2007, the Guild's leadership team changed. A new president and several new board members joined. Some of their recent shows included Alice in Wonderland and Dearly Departed in 2007. In 2008, they performed The Actor's Nightmare, Li'l Abner, and And Then There Were None.

What They Do: Productions

Today, the Lincoln Theatre Guild usually puts on 4 or 5 shows each year. Most of these performances happen at The Lincoln Cultural Center or in the auditorium at North Lincoln High School.

The Guild also hosts an annual summer drama camp. This camp teaches acting skills and takes place in two different locations in the county. It's a great way for young people to learn about theater!

Working Together: Partnerships

The Lincoln Theatre Guild works with other groups in the community. They are part of the Lincoln Arts Council. They are also a member of the Metrolina Theatre Association, which connects theater groups in the larger Charlotte area.

The Guild also gets money and support from local government and businesses. This help allows them to keep putting on great shows for everyone to enjoy.

Who's in Charge: Board of Directors

The Guild has a group of leaders called the board of directors. These people meet every month. They are in charge of choosing which shows to perform. They also make sure the technical parts of the shows, like lights and sound, work well. Plus, they help raise money for the Guild.
