Linda Klarfeld's Early Life and Training
Linda was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Her family moved to Australia in 1980 when she was very young. Her dad was a drummer in rock bands, and Linda says he helped her become creative.
Her family settled in Sydney, Australia. After high school, Linda started a seven-year training program to become a sculptor. She learned from different sculptors around the world, including Ctibor Havelka and Vaclav Skalicky. She also studied at an international stone sculptors school in Horice, Czech Republic.
Linda Klarfeld's Sculpting Career
Teenage Years: 1988 – 1995
Linda sold her first sculpture when she was just 14 years old! Soon after, she told her family she wanted to be a sculptor. She won several awards for her art during her teenage years. Some of her early works, like sculptures of her father, were shown in art exhibitions. She also won big prizes for her sculptures 'King Lear', 'Adolescent', and 'The Joyful Season'.
Twenties: 1996 – 2005
Linda went to Macquarie University and earned a degree in Psychology. She felt that studying how people behave helped her art. She said it taught her to "observe people more closely." This even inspired her to create sculptures of Macquarie University graduates after watching her own graduation ceremony.
During this time, Linda met Joan Abela, who became a big supporter of her work. Ms. Abela asked Linda to create many sculptures for her home, which was designed like a castle.
When Linda was 21, she had her first solo art show. It was opened by famous Australian adventurer Dick Smith. At 22, Linda received her first major religious art project. She created "Gethsemane and The Way of the Cross 2000." After this, she received many public projects. These included a life-size bronze sculpture of rugby league player Peter Gallagher. She also created 'Expressions of Love', a group of 16 statues for the Hunter Valley Gardens.
Thirties: 2006 – 2015
In her thirties, Linda created sculptures of many well-known Australians. These included Dr Victor Chang, cricketers Keith Miller and Bill Woodfull, and AFL footballer Neil Roberts.
She also started creating art about the business world. She made a collection of sculptures called the "Board of Directors Series." These were semi-abstract (not completely realistic) sculptures showing different types of people in business. Later, she created "Icons of Business," which were realistic portrait busts of 11 important Australian business leaders.
Linda also became known for her religious sculptures during this time. She created pieces that showed strong emotions and dramatic religious themes. Some of her famous religious works include St Marcellin Champagnat (2012) and St Mary MacKillop (2011).
