Linus Okok Okwach (born October 20, 1952 – died September 12, 2020) was an important leader in the Catholic Church in Kenya. He served as the first Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Homa Bay. He became bishop in 1993 and stepped down from his role in 2002.
Early Life and Becoming a Priest
Linus Okok Okwach was born on October 20, 1952. His birthplace was Kisumu, a city in Kenya. He decided to become a priest and was officially ordained on December 10, 1980. He worked as a priest in the Kisumu area until 1993.
Serving as Bishop
Father Okwach was chosen to be the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Homa Bay on October 18, 1993. He was the very first leader of this new diocese. He was made a bishop in a special ceremony in Homa Bay on December 31, 1993. Cardinal Jozef Tomko led this important event. Bishop Okwach resigned from his position as Bishop of Homa Bay on February 20, 2002.
Later Years and Passing Away
In 2019, Bishop Emeritus Okwach had a fall at his home and hurt his back. After this accident, he was not able to stand or walk again. About three weeks before he passed away, Bishop Okwach was admitted to St Monica Hospital in Kisumu. He died in the hospital on September 12, 2020. He was buried at St Paul's Cathedral in Homa Bay on September 30, 2020.
