Who Was Lionel Tollemache?
Lionel Tollemache was an important figure in Scottish history. He inherited the title of Earl of Dysart, which meant he was part of the nobility. Noble families often owned large estates and had special roles in society.
Early Life and Family
When Lionel became an adult, his father did not give him any money or property. Because of this, Lionel felt he didn't owe his father anything. He decided to get married without telling his father or getting his permission.
His First Marriage
On October 2, 1760, Lionel married Charlotte Walpole. The wedding took place at St James's Church in Piccadilly. Charlotte was the daughter of Sir Edward Walpole. Her uncle, Horace Walpole, who was a famous writer, described Lionel as "a very handsome person." About ten years after his marriage, Lionel became the Earl of Dysart.
Charlotte became very ill and suffered for a long time. She passed away at Ham House on September 5, 1789.
Later Life and Second Marriage
After Charlotte's death, Lionel married again on April 19, 1791. His second wife was Magdalene Lewis. She was the sister of his brother Wilbraham's wife.
Lionel did not have any children with either of his wives. He passed away at Ham House in 1799. Since he had no children, his title and estates went to his brother, Wilbraham.
