About Lisa Shaw
Her Early Life
Lisa Shaw was born in Canada. Her parents were from Jamaica. She grew up in Scarborough, Ontario, and was the youngest of six children.
As she was growing up, Lisa loved listening to many different artists. Some of her favorites included Sade, Billie Holiday, Stevie Nicks, Roberta Flack, and Kate Bush. Her older sisters would take her to clubs, where she discovered disco and funk bands. These included Chic, Sister Sledge, The S.O.S. Band, and Kool & the Gang. These artists helped shape her own musical style.
In 1995, Lisa moved to New York City. This move helped her music career grow even more.
Her Music Journey
When Lisa Shaw arrived in New York City, she became a part of the underground electronica and deep house music scenes. These are special communities of musicians and fans who love electronic dance music.
She released her very first song in 1995. It was called "Makin' Love Makin' Music." This song was written by a DJ named DJ Smash. Lisa has also worked with other artists on deep house projects. One of her most notable collaborations was with the producer and songwriter, Miguel Migs.
Lisa released her first solo album, Cherry, on October 25, 2005. This album was released by the Naked Music record label. Cherry was very popular and reached number 20 on the Billboard Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart in November 2005. One of the songs from the album, "Born to Fly," also did well. It reached number 25 on the Dance Singles Sales chart.
Lisa Shaw also sang on Miguel Migs's album, Those Things, which came out in 2007. Later, in 2008, a dance group called Kaba Modern used a remix of her song "Grown Apart" on the TV show America's Best Dance Crew.
In 2009, Lisa released her second album, called "Free." This album was released by Salted Music. Many talented producers helped create this album. These included Dave Warrin, Tim K, Ethan White from Tortured Soul, and Miguel Migs. Lisa performed songs from "Free" on the radio show KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic. She performed with producer Tim K and DJ Joshua Heath.
