Lise Gervais (1933–1998) was a talented Canadian artist. She was known for her abstract paintings and sculptures. Lise Gervais also led the Conseil des Artistes Peintres du Quebec (Quebec Artists' Council) in 1983 and 1984. This made her an important voice for artists in Quebec.

Early Life and Education

Lise Gervais was born in Saint-Césaire, Quebec, on September 2, 1933. From a young age, she loved art. She decided to study painting and sculpture. She attended the École des beaux-arts de Montréal. This was a famous art school in Montreal. Her teachers included well-known artists. These included Jacques de Tonnancour and Stanley Cosgrove for painting. She also learned sculpture from Louis Archambault.

Her Unique Art Style

In 1961, Lise Gervais had her first art show. It was at Galerie Denyse Delrue in Montreal. Her art style is linked to a group called the Automatistes. This group believed in creating art from feelings. They let their subconscious guide their hands. This was a way to make art freely. Her work was similar to that of Paul-Émile Borduas, another famous Automatiste artist.

A Teacher and Leader

Lise Gervais was not just an artist. She also loved to teach. For many years, she taught art in Montreal. She taught at the École des beaux-arts. She also taught at the Université du Québec. Later, she taught at Concordia University. In 1983, she was chosen as president. She led the Conseil des Artistes-Peintres du Quebec. This showed her dedication to the art community. Lise Gervais passed away in Montreal on April 30, 1998.
