Lissotestella is a genus of very tiny sea snails. These snails live in the ocean. They are so small that they are often called micromolluscs. Lissotestella snails are a type of gastropod mollusc. Scientists have not yet fully assigned them to a specific family within the superfamily Seguenzioidea.

About Lissotestella Snails
Lissotestella snails are marine animals. This means they live in saltwater environments. They are part of a large group of animals called Mollusca. Snails, clams, and octopuses are all molluscs.
What is a Gastropod?
Gastropods are a class of molluscs. This group includes all snails and slugs. They usually have a single shell, or sometimes no shell at all. Lissotestella snails have a small, spiral shell.
Tiny Ocean Dwellers
These snails are known for being minute. This means they are extremely small. They are a type of micromollusc. Micromolluscs are molluscs that are less than 5 millimeters long. You would need a magnifying glass to see them clearly!
Where Do They Live?
Lissotestella snails have been found in different parts of the ocean. Some species live near New Zealand. They have existed for a long time. Their fossils show they have been around since the Miocene epoch. The Miocene epoch was a period of time that ended about 5.3 million years ago.
Different Kinds of Lissotestella
The genus Lissotestella includes several different species. A species is a group of living things that can reproduce with each other. Some of these species are still alive today. Others are only known from fossils. The dagger symbol (†) next to a name means it is an extinct species.
Here are some of the species in the Lissotestella group:
- † Lissotestella alpha (Laws, 1939)
- † Lissotestella basispiralis Maxwell, 1992
- Lissotestella caelata (Powell, 1937)
- Lissotestella consobrina (Powell, 1940)
- Lissotestella cookiana Dell, 1956
- Lissotestella rissoaformis (Powell, 1931)
- Lissotestella tenuilirata (Powell, 1931)
- Lissotestella tryphenensis (Powell, 1937)
- † Lissotestella waimamakuensis Laws, 1948
Who Discovered Them?
Many of these species were first described by Arthur William Baden Powell. He was a famous New Zealand malacologist. A malacologist is a scientist who studies molluscs. He named many new species of snails.
